Fifty Fathoms SPORT by Blancpain

I love this Blancpain sports watch and I love the name “Fifty Fathoms“; it sounds like a super fly pitch black car that talks and transforms and only comes out at night. Imagination aside, the watch is pretty awesome and the basics include a unidirectional bezel, antimagnetic case, self-winding movement, and a black dial.
The solid blackness of the watch makes it undeniably alluring and mysterious as only a few hundred of them leave Blancpain’s workshop each year. There are lots of things I love about this particular Fifty Fathoms watch. The first is its ultra slim status. It comes in at 15.50 mm case thickness, 45 mm in diameter, 23 mm between horns, 5.65 mm calibre thickness, 30.60 calibre diameter, and an ultra slim self winding movement.
Even though the Fifty Fathoms SPORT watch by Blancpain has a date, it doesn’t have a double window date indication, which keeps in with the simple and sleek design. With all this mystery; there must be an amazing story a behind the watch, right? Yes!
The Fifty Fathoms collection came to design when the French Ministry of defense approached Blancpain about creating an elite watch for combat divers that could withstand underwater missions. From then the collection earned credibility among other country special forces units including French Navy GERS and movies like World of Silence.

Alpina has a long history of watch making. Starting in 1883, a collaboration of manufacturers and retailers created the company we know today. One collection that stands out today is Alpina’s Extreme Automatic Collection. Jean Paul Gaultier, like Karl Lagerfeld at Chanel, plunged into an aquatic adventure, though in his case, it was "Little Mermaid says, 'Hello Sailor!' " You can always count on JPG for a fun tableau to get things started, so there she was: Coco Rocha, posing on a rock against a watery backdrop with soap bubbles floating up around her.The mergirl-mariner theme made a neat excuse for another of Gaultier's signature cross-gender mergers. It opened with a couple of memorably chic twists on Parisian classics: a stunning slim navy coat over a striped sweater and sinuous gold-sequin column skirt and a semitranslucent scallop-edged trench that might have been made of fish skin. From there, he trawled the oceans for similes: macramé made to look like fishing nets, plissé inserts suggesting underwater flora, chiffon fronds floating like seaweed, cascading paillettes imitating fish scales or mother-of-pearl, necklaces fashioned into spongiform beads.It ended with Rocha, making an entrance as the mermaid bride on coral crutches, with a pair of conical shells for a bra. That was a typical ta-da Gaultier punch line, and the couturier was certainly in a cheery mood afterward. "When I started couture, I really thought couture customers were dead or dying," he said. "But now there are all these new clients. We're working all the time, and I love it—it's a permit to create!"

By Sarah MowerHaute couture—the supreme arena of fashion's art—isn't the place where you expect to see great designers trotting out old ideas, unless that is, something fabulously unforeseen comes out of them. That's why Jean Paul Gaultier stumbled this season. He opened with an old equestrian joke (which he's told many times recently in his own collection and at Hermès) and then randomly added a supposedly new device: flashes of neon. (Only that's "old" in its own way—a fad that flared and fizzled out in clubs last summer.)It was a leather framework of saddle epaulets and harnesses strapped over a fur coat that set things off on the wrong foot. It was that, and then not letting the thing go until he had run through all the punning comparisons with cages and corsetry, right up to the bride's whalebone "veil." Like the use of hard-to-love jolts of fluorescent pink and green, the stable and boning references only provided a tiring distraction from the classically amazing pieces the eye really wanted to drink in. Gaultier is an indisputable master of the trench, tux suit, and draped evening gown, and they were all present—the trench in plissé silk, the tux formed into a trompe l'oeil jumpsuit, the dress brilliant in pea green crepe or cobalt blue jersey. At this stage of his career, these rare accomplishments come so easily to Gaultier that perhaps he underestimates how much people appreciate them. It was a pity he worked so hard to cover them up.

By Sarah MowerHaute couture is hardly a license to print money, but that didn't stop Jean Paul Gaultier from issuing his own currency for Spring. That's in a manner of speaking, of course. His conceit was to take scrolling, curlicued calligraphy and abstract it into fine-lined prints, fishnets, and embroideries, and marry those with the strong-shouldered, sometimes pinstriped tailoring he introduced in the eighties. On the back screen, an image of a pen-and-ink flourish appeared in motion, going through strange computer-generated distortions. After a while, the penny dropped: It looked like the patterns used on bank notes.Trust Gaultier to try to make light of contemporary affairs, but as the current situation isn't much of a joke, he wasn't too heavy-handed with the puns. Instead, he brought out his best assets: tailoring, a touch of the matelot, and a reminder of his career-long obsession with corsetry. And as if to underline the point that certain things can look just as good 20-something years later, he had Inès de la Fressange, the eighties runway star, working a couple of smoking dresses for all they were worth. As for the complex squiggly macramé and lace effects and the dress with printed flyaway panels reminiscent of paper money, they looked like so much passing ephemera. It was the inimitable lines and supersharp proportions of the cropped jackets over sexy raised-waist pants that made Gaultier couture look like a solid investment.

‘Diamonds in Your Mind’ by Paco Peregrin is a fantastically surreal photo collection featured in issue 77 of NEO2 magazine. The Spanish photographer has been highlighted in Trend Hunter before, and I’m sure this will not be the last time.
The obviously photoshopped images show stark male and female models, scalp removed to reveal a tangle of coloured yarn as brain matter. Hiding within the wool are treasures such as a tiara embedded with Louis Vuitton symbols, gem-encrusted jewellery, Chanel sunglasses and fancy watches.
As the print is far too small for me to read, I can’t tell you what the actual intent is of the photos, but here’s my take: Our minds are packed full of potentially useful and creative substance (the yarn), but are clouded with materialistic desires for luxury objects. Hence they are just ‘Diamonds in Your Mind.’ Have I looked too deep for a meaning?
